What is Integrative Health and Why is it Changing Our Approach to Wellness?
Integrative Health as a Mainstream Option for Optimal Wellbeing
We are living in a modern world with challenges that we often feel unequipped to handle. Modern life has placed demands on our bodies, minds, and emotional balance that we were never designed to carry. Constant stress, exposure to toxins, processed food, environmental exposures, and the constant pressure to "push through" have left many people struggling. So many of us are no longer thriving as we are tired and wired, not sleeping well, dealing with digestive issues, brain fog, and hormonal imbalances. Does this sound like you? I was there once. And if I'm honest, though I feel well most of the time, I am constantly fine tuning my health practices to build resilience to the modern challenges that I am exposed to. This blog will discuss how integrative health has become the foundation for my health and that of thousands of others.
What is Integrative Health?
For many people conventional medicine is often the first place they turn for health support. Although it plays a critical role in managing emergencies and diagnosing diseases, it focuses on managing symptoms rather than true healing of the root cause. This lack of focus on healing is why I began exploring other health and healing disciplines over 30 years ago. This journey has led me to a true integrative health approach.
So, what is integrative health? Integrative health focuses on the whole person -- body, mind, and spirit --and recognizes that true healing means restoring balance across all these dimensions. It also understands and honors the synergies of the functional systems in our body down to the cellular level. Healing becomes restoration of balance, resolving deficiencies, supporting biochemical and energetic processes, and building resilience at the physical and mental levels. It becomes integrative through the inclusion of ancient philosophies and healing wisdoms with modern functional and orthomolecular sciences in the healing protocols.
Where conventional medicine might ask, "How do we stop this symptom?", integrative health looks for the root cause to bring healing and might ask, "Why is this imbalance happening and what is it telling us? What support is needed to help the body return to a state of vitality?"
I believe in the body's innate wisdom and ability to heal. This is why I chose to become an Integrative Health Practitioner. I have witnessed the incredible healing that our bodies are capable of creating and I wanted to create a practice that blends the wisdom of traditional healing systems with the precision of modern science to help people who are stuck between short-term "fixes" and long-term struggles.
The 7 Integrative Disciplines That Shape My Practice
Integrative practice is built upon seven disciplines each bringing a unique perspective, all rooted in ancient and modern science with proven efficacy, some dating back thousands of years. Together these disciplines create a holistic approach to restoring health and balance.
Ayurvedic Medicine - Healing for Body, Mind, and Spirit
Originating in India over 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda is one of the oldest systems of healing. Based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Ayurveda teaches us that prevention and harmony with nature are just as important as treatment. I like to call this "the science of life." It utilizes diet, herbal treatments, and breathing techniques to maintain or restore health according to individual constitutional types.
Bioregulatory Medicine - Enhancing Natural Self-Healing
Bioregulatory medicine focuses on restoring the body's self-regulating capacity by reducing toxicity and inflammation. It blends therapies from various medical traditions to enhance the body's natural healing mechanisms and maintain homeostasis. Instead of suppressing symptoms, it looks for ways to restore communication between the body's systems so healing can occur from within. Think of this as "the science of self-healing."
Herbalism (TCM) - Balancing Body and Mind Through Ancient Wisdom
Herbalism and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are ancient systems of healthcare integrating physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of wellness, using tools such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary therapy to balance the body's energies. It is based on the philosophy of the free flow of energy (Qi) through the body and the theory of balance within the body (Yin and Yang).
Eastern Philosophy - Insights & Practices for Harmonious Living
Beyond physical healing, Eastern Philosophy encompasses a vast range of philosophical traditions originating in Asia and other indigenous teachings. Often emphasizing the interconnectedness of all life and the importance of harmony and balance, it brings mindfulness, meditation, breathing, and movement practices that connect the mind and emotions with the body. By cultivating awareness, balance, and presence, we reduce stress and allow the body's natural healing processes to work more effectively. Widely accepted in Western cultures, the mind-body connection has proven to be especially important in healing the body.
Traditional Naturopathy - Natural Therapies for Preventive Health & Wellness
Traditional Naturopathy is a holistic approach to wellness promoting healing through natural therapies and lifestyle interventions, aiming to support the body's own healing abilities. It emphasizes prevention and the use of non-invasive treatments and natural remedies such as herbs, nutrition, and energetic therapies. Built on the principle that the body has an innate ability to heal when given the right conditions This discipline emphasizes nutrition, detoxification, and lifestyle changes to remove obstacles to health and support the body's resilience. In this discipline, we use "right living" to rebalance the body. My personal health journey began with the wonders of Naturopathy applied as a practical guide to a lifestyle that supports my overall wellbeing. It's also where being in nature and exposure to natural sunlight connect with our innate sense of healing and resilience.
Orthomolecular Medicine - Optimizing Health Through Biochemical Balance
Orthomolecular medicine focuses on the role of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in healing. By restoring the right biochemical balance or deficiencies based on individual biochemistry using substances natural to the body, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other trace elements. This approach prioritizes prevention and treatment of disease through nutrients at doses intended to promote optimal health. This is about the right molecules in the right amounts. In a world where supplements are pushed for profit, this discipline uses science to identify what is needed, how much, and for how long to support healing.
Functional Medicine - Harnessing Personized Healthcare for Root Cause Resolution
Functional medicine is an individualized, client-centered approach focusing on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease. It uses a systems-oriented model, looking for root causes of imbalance through lab testing and personalized protocols. It's particularly powerful for addressing chronic conditions and supporting long-term vitality. Here we help people at a functional not disease level through engagement with both client and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership.
Why An Integrative Approach Matters
When combined, these seven disciplines create a comprehensive approach that doesn't chase symptoms -- it restores balance across the physical, emotional, and mental layers of health. This is the foundation of my integrative health practice.
I believe in a person's ability to be well when we embrace the healing power of the mind, body, and soul. Supporting the unique healing code within each of us, using the seven foundational disciplines, allows us to honor our whole self and work with our body's natural wisdom.
What is Integrative Health Coaching?
Integrative health coaching is a personalized, whole-body approach to wellness. It focuses on helping you uncover the root causes of your health challenges and guiding you to make sustainable changes in your lifestyle, mindset, and daily habits. As your health coach, I partner with you to create a customized plan that support your goals -- whether that's more energy, better digestion, stress regulation, weight balance, longevity, or simply feeling more like yourself again. We may explore areas like nutrition, movement, stress management, sleep, emotional wellbeing, and even functional lab testing when needed. This type of coaching blends science-backed strategies with compassionate support, empowering you to take charge of your health and make lasting progress at a pace that works for you.
How can Integrative Health Coaching Benefit You?
An integrative health practitioner helps you understand the root causes of your symptoms so you can heal rather than simply manage them. By looking at your body as a whole, we uncover imbalances, toxicities, or deficiencies that may be holding you back from feeling your best. I'll guide you with personalized support, combining lifestyle shifts, nutrition, natural therapies, and functional lab testing (if needed) to help restore balance and energy. This approach isn't one-size-fit-all -- it's tailored to your unique needs, goal, and daily life. Whether you're dealing with chronic issues, burnout, or just want to feel more vibrant and in control of your health, working with an integrative health practitioner can give you the tools, education and support to create long-term change. In short, it allows you to leave the cycle of managing "unwellness" and move to a path that offers real healing -- for life.
What Types of Therapies and Practices Do I Integrate into My Coaching?
I integrate a variety of evidence-based and holistic practices to support healing from the inside out. These include nutrition and lifestyle strategies, mindset and stress management techniques, detoxification support, movement recommendations, emotional wellness practices, and high-quality supplement protocols when needed. I also incorporate principles from the DESTRESS Protocol developed by Dr Stephen Cabral, which blends the best of ancient healing wisdom with modern science. The goal is to create a personalized, sustainable plan that supports your body, mind, and lifestyle. Whether we're addressing nutrition, sleep, hormone balance, gut health, or emotional wellbeing, everything we do is designed to help restore balance and vitality at the root level.
Are the Recommendations Provided Safe and Backed by Science?
Yes. The recommendations I provide are rooted in evidence-based integrative and functional medicine practices, designed to support the body's natural healing processes safely and effectively. I rely on trusted resources, including peer-reviewed research, clinical experience, and protocols developed by leading experts such as Dr. Stephen Cabral and others in the field of integrative health. All supplements, lifestyle shifts, and wellness strategies are chosen with your unique health history and goals in mind. Safety is always a top priority, and whenever necessary, I'll encourage you to consult with your licensed medial provider to ensure all aspects of your care are aligned.
Outside the Holistic Approach, how is Integrative Health Coaching Different from Conventional Medicine?
Integrative Health Coaching understand that no two people are the same, and every person deserves a thoughtful, personalized approach to wellness. Your history, lifestyle, and stressors are unique, and so is the way your body heals. That's why we focus on understanding your specific needs and identifying the underlying imbalances affecting your health and preventing you from feeling well. There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to healing.
Additionally, conventional medicine works on a linear healthy/disease model where you are considered "healthy" until you cross into a diagnosable disease state. Integrative health uses a health/energy spectrum approach that considers how you feel to determine where you are on the spectrum, and we work from that point to help you improve your health and energy. In other words, if you don't feel well even though the doctor insists everything is normal, we work together to help you reach a state that feels healthy.
